The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has suspended the three-year prison sentence of PTI Chairman Imran Khan in the Toshakhana case. Despite this decision, Imran remains in “judicial lockup” due to directives from a special court created for the Official Secrets Act, connecting him with the cipher case. The cipher case revolves around a missing diplomatic document, which the PTI claims contained threats from the U.S. to remove Imran from power. The ex-prime minister previously filed an appeal against the prison term, but the final judgment copy will be released shortly.
Reactions and Further Proceedings
Following the IHC’s decision, PTI supporters demanded Khan’s immediate release and various PTI leaders vocalized their support for him. Barrister Ali Zafar emphasized that the trial in the Toshakhana case was flawed since Imran wasn’t allowed to submit defense witnesses. Other PTI officials expressed concerns about Khan’s potential arrest in other cases, viewing any such move as malicious.
However, the opposition, PML-N, conveyed their discontent with the verdict, with Shehbaz Sharif noting that the sentence had been suspended, not terminated. Comments from former law minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and others highlighted that the suspension does not negate the conviction and that Imran’s disqualification remains intact.
Background of the Toshakhana Case
The Toshakhana case accused Imran Khan of concealing details of gifts he received from foreign officials during his tenure as prime minister. Gifts received by officials are meant to be reported to the Cabinet Division as per Toshakhana rules. Imran Khan faced legal troubles over retaining these gifts, leading to his disqualification by the ECP. Following a series of legal proceedings and appeals, the IHC suspended the ex-premier’s three-year sentence in the case.
