Former Prime Minister of Pakistan and Chief of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, may soon be transferred to Adiala Jail from his current confinement in Attock District Prison, following a petition filed by his legal counsel in Islamabad High Court (IHC). The plea cites better facilities and the availability of A-class resources in Adiala Jail, along with Khan’s right to access his family and legal team, including Dr. Sultan.
Current Incarceration Conditions
Imran Khan is held in cell no 2 in Attock jail, a more secure and well-equipped environment than his prior accommodation. The cell’s furnishings include a table, chair, mattress, bed, and 24-hour medical supervision. High-alert security measures are in place within and around the jail, including prison department commandos, CCTV surveillance, and a standing rule preventing any officer from entering Khan’s cell without the superintendent’s approval. A Rescue 1122 ambulance and paramedic staff are always stationed outside the jail.
Charges and Trial
Imran Khan received a three-year prison sentence handed down by Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Humayun Dilawar for a case filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) alleging that he concealed Toshakhana gifts. Dilawar also issued Khan’s arrest warrant and disqualified him from participating in the upcoming elections. While his initial transportation to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi was underway, security concerns prompted a redirection to Attock Jail. The sentence followed Khan’s failure to disclose the acquisition and subsequent sale of Toshakhana gifts while submitting his 2018-2019 financial declaration, in which he only listed “four goats” as his assets.
