Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman and ex-prime minister Imran Khan is reportedly unhappy with President Dr. Arif Alvi, as communicated by Aleema Khan, his sister, after a recent court appearance in Lahore. Aleema, involved in the May 9 riots case, voiced concerns about her brother’s deteriorating health, noting his significant weight loss and lack of facilities for physical activity.
Election Date Controversy
A significant point of contention has been the delay in announcing the date for the upcoming general elections. PTI’s core committee had previously urged President Alvi to announce the polls’ date to uphold his constitutional responsibilities. The committee warned that failing to do so could lead to constitutional and democratic rights violations.
While the caretaker government believes that only the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has the authority to announce the date, the president initially sought to negotiate with Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja. Raja, however, asserted the ECP’s exclusive right to make the announcement, referencing the ECP Act of 2017 amendments.
