Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan declared a nationwide protest movement against the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led government, pledging to lead the campaign from Adiala Jail, where authorities have incarcerated him since August 2023.
After meeting with Khan, PTI Senator Ali Zafar announced the protest plan, signalling a shift toward street agitation.
Khan, who denies corruption and incitement charges, has directed Zafar to draft a comprehensive protest strategy in coordination with the PTI’s legal team and leadership.
Zafar quoted Khan saying, “The waiting game is over,” and emphasised that the movement will extend beyond Islamabad. The PTI plans a nationwide protest to challenge what the party perceives as political persecution. Khan stated, “We are being pushed to the wall.”
#فیصلہ_کن_تحریک pic.twitter.com/4TayuvpvL5

The PML-N coalition faces PTI’s accusations of engineering legal actions to sideline Khan, who recently offered dialogue with the military establishment for national unity but rejected personal concessions. Khan’s shift to protests reflects frustration with judicial and executive inaction, per The Express Tribune. Past PTI protest attempts, like post-Eid 2025, faltered, but Zafar stressed this campaign will be “decisive” and well-planned, avoiding previous pitfalls.
Tensions between the military and the PTI continue to be evident, particularly highlighted by the absence of PTI leaders from a dinner celebrating Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, Pakistan’s response to Indian aggression in May 2025.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s non-attendance further emphasises this rift. While PML-N ministers attempt to downplay PTI’s ability to mobilise supporters, Imran Khan’s call for support from jail could potentially energise his active social media supporters.

The Imran Khan protest has the potential to reshape Pakistan’s political landscape, testing the PTI’s ability to mobilise in an increasingly restricted opposition environment. As political unrest in Pakistan intensifies, Khan’s leadership, even behind bars, underscores his enduring influence. This situation could escalate tensions between Imran Khan, the PML-N, and the military establishment.
