On Wednesday, Imran Khan, founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), secured bail in the Toshakhana-II case. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) ordered his release upon posting two surety bonds valued at Rs 10 lakhs each.
On November 14, Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, pleaded for acquittal in the same case. Special Central Judge Shah Rukh Arjumand delivered the verdict, rejecting the former prime minister and his wife’s acquittal requests.
In another related development, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) contested Bushra Bibi’s bail at the Supreme Court. The FIA’s appeal highlighted that the bail was granted in the chamber of an Islamabad High Court judge, a move they claimed contravened Supreme Court guidelines. Furthermore, the FIA implicated Bushra Bibi as a co-defendant with her husband.
On July 13, both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi faced arrest under a new National Accountability Bureau (NAB) reference concerning Toshakhana, just hours after their acquittal in the Iddat case. This turn of events followed the Islamabad district and sessions court’s acceptance of their appeals against their conviction in the Iddat case.
Earlier in February, a trial court had sentenced the couple to seven years in prison each, accompanied by a Rs500,000 fine, after finding their marriage (nikah) to be fraudulent.
