Imran Khan, the PTI founder, has been restricted from hosting meetings at Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail for two weeks.
Imran Khan was transferred from Attock jail in September 2023. He is currently serving a 31-year cumulative sentence across various cases. Khan previously met with lawyers, party leaders, and family on designated days.
In January, Khan and ex-foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi received 10-year sentences each in the cipher case for leaking confidential communications. An additional 14-year sentence was imposed on Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in the Toshakhana case for misappropriating gifts received during his tenure, along with a fine of Rs1.57 billion.
They also faced a seven-year sentence and Rs500,000 fine each in an “un-Islamic nikah” case for marrying before Bibi’s iddat period ended. Furthermore, both were indicted in a £190 million case within Adiala jail.
Amid calls for Khan’s release from what his party claims are “fabricated” charges, concerns about his safety have escalated. Recently, the Counter Terrorism Department arrested three terrorists near the jail, seizing a map of Adiala Jail, weapons, and explosives. These incidents highlight ongoing security issues surrounding the facility.
