The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has recommended that Pakistan enhance its social support initiatives, complementing the existing Benazir Income Support Program (BISP).
In a recent statement, the IMF emphasized the need for Pakistan to expand social protection measures for its vulnerable populations and the importance of consistent efforts in administering social assistance programs.
Furthermore, the IMF advised maintaining the current protected electricity and gas tariff slabs. They noted that while health and education expenditure targets were met in September of the current fiscal year, the caretaker government fell short of the December targets due to limited capabilities.
The IMF has called on Pakistan’s forthcoming elected government to sustain social security spending through the end of the current financial year.
Additionally, the IMF commended the BISP for its effectiveness in providing immediate support. However, it also pointed out that the program could be further enhanced.
