The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has indicated its readiness to collaborate with a prolonged caretaker setup in the nation to conclude its current $3 billion Standby Arrangement (SBA) programme, as revealed by top official sources. These sources highlighted the IMF’s interest in cooperating with this extended caretaker arrangement until the SBA programme was completed in early 2024.
Islamabad also apprised the IMF of the potential extension of the caretaker system following the Council of Common Interests’ nod for the 7th Population and Housing Census of 2023. Given the Election Commission of Pakistan’s schedule, the upcoming elections are anticipated to be held in the first quarter of 2024.
Selection for Key Ministries Underway After IMF Endorsement
Post the endorsement by the IMF, the nomination process for primary ministries, notably the finance ministry, is in progress. Among the leading candidates are Sultana Allana, Dr Ashfaque Hassan Khan, and Tariq Bajwa. Names such as Muhammad Mian Soomro and Ijaz Gohar are in consideration for other crucial economic ministries.
Shabbar Zaidi, the former FBR chairman, has declined any position in the interim setup for personal reasons. Speculations hint at the likelihood of Allana receiving a prime ministerial position if Jalil Abbas Jilani becomes the caretaker premier. In contrast, the chances of Allana and Dr Ashfaque might diminish if Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh assumes the role. The final decision on top ministerial positions will be contingent on the appointment of the chief at the PM’s office.
