A district and sessions court on Saturday sentenced lawyer and activist Imaan Mazari and her husband Hadi Ali Chattha to a combined 17 years in prison each in a case linked to controversial social media posts.
Additional Sessions Judge Afzal Majoka announced the verdict after hearing final arguments from both the prosecution and the defence.
According to the 22-page written judgment, the court convicted the couple under multiple sections of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).
The court sentenced Mazari and Chattha to five years’ imprisonment each and imposed a fine of Rs5 million under Section 9 of PECA.
Under Section 10 of the law, the court handed down 10 years in prison each, along with a Rs30 million fine per person.
The judge also convicted the couple under Section 26-A of PECA. He sentenced them to two years in jail each and imposed an additional Rs1 million fine each.
The sentences run consecutively, bringing the total prison term for each accused to 17 years, subject to applicable legal procedures.
