With UFC 308 approaching in Abu Dhabi, Ilia Topuria (15-0) is set to defend his featherweight title against Max Holloway (26-7) on Saturday, October 26.
Known as El Matador, Topuria has captivated attention with his unyielding ambition. He aims to be the first to knock out Holloway and set his sights on his next opponent, UFC’s top-ranked Islam Makhachev (26-1).
Topuria, since joining the UFC, has boldly challenged fighters like Paddy Pimblett and Movsar Evloev, but Makhachev represents a significant step up. Makhachev, who leads the lightweight division after victories over Alexander Volkanovski and Dustin Poirier, is Topuria’s dream matchup. “He talks too much, but we can settle it in the octagon, not on the street, or I’ll pay his medical bills,” the Spanish champion declared.
The tension between Topuria and Makhachev is escalating, with both fighters exchanging heated words.
“If he keeps up this attitude, it will end badly for him. He needs to focus on his division and defend his belt at least once,” Makhachev cautioned, highlighting the seriousness of their potential future clash.
While a bout between them remains distant, the groundwork is being laid. Topuria’s immediate challenge is Holloway, and Makhachev faces Arman Tsarukyan, yet a ‘legacy fight’ looms as a possibility should Topuria continue his dominance. “I can beat him, and it will happen soon. He’s next,” Topuria confidently stated.
