The Islamabad High Court (IHC) is set to pronounce its judgement today on a notable petition. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has challenged the decision to conduct hearings of the high-profile cypher case within jail confines, as revealed by the court’s latest cause list. This development, circulated by the court registrar, has garnered significant attention.
Chief Justice Aamer Farooq is also slated to consider Imran Khan’s application for post-arrest bail. In a parallel development, the court has summoned responses regarding Khan’s plea for exemption from the case proceedings under the protective umbrella of the Constitution’s Article 248.
Complex Legal Battles Surrounding the Cypher Case
The cypher case, drawing national interest, revolves around allegations linked to a document that Imran Khan publicised during his tenure as Prime Minister as proof of international conspiracies designed to destabilize his government. This controversy preceded the successful no-confidence motion that consequently led to the collapse of his administration.
In response to these events, the IHC recently consolidated Imran Khan’s multiple appeals, which pursued the dismissal of charges and a halt to his trial by the Special Court formed under the stringent Official Secrets Act (OSA). Adding to these legal manoeuvres, the PTI leader initiated another exemption request citing Article 248, arguing the inapplicability of OSA’s Section 5 to his situation.
As the legal proceedings intensify, the Special Court anticipates continuing the case hearing at Adiala Jail shortly. The upcoming session aims to formally indict the accused, including Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi, as part of the ongoing inquiry into the contentious cypher case, marking another significant moment in this politically charged legal saga.
