The Islamabad High Court (IHC) barred the police from acting against Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, the leader of the Awami Muslim League (AML), in the cases that had been filed against him in Lasbela and Karachi.
The decisions were made after Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri of the IHC heard a petition against the registration of a case in Sindh that the former interior minister submitted.
Rashid’s attorney informed the IHC during the hearing that the court had halted further proceedings regarding the summons issued by the Abpara Police Station. He further stated that police had detained his client and opened a case based on the same complaint.
Another first information report (FIR), filed in Karachi while Sheikh Rashid was in the custody of the Islamabad Police, was also disclosed to the court by the attorney.
Justice Jahangiri questioned, “If Poly Clinic [Islamabad] is the location where the statement was given, then how was a case registered in Karachi?”.
The court also questioned how the same incident could be the subject of multiple FIRs in various cities.
Rashid’s attorney informed the court that a third case had been filed against his client in Murree.
The judge inquired, “Has the arrest been made in all three cases? The attorney informed the court that only one case involved the arrest.
According to the law, an arrest in one case is considered an arrest in all cases; Justice Jahangiri commented on this.
Rashid’s attorney informed the court that the former interior minister had been “tied to a chair for six hours” at an undisclosed location. Additionally, he asserted that the AML chief was “tortured” and subjected to “political questions” at this time.
Following that, the court noted that cases had been filed against the managing director of the PTV and the secretary of information during Rashid’s tenure.
“The same is taking place with you. Consider what would have happened if the female secretary had been detained and taken to the Budh Bher police station, the court questioned.
When cases were filed against the former federal minister in Karachi and Lasbela, the court ordered the police to refrain from acting. Additionally, notices were sent to the bar councils, attorney general, and advocate general of Islamabad.
After that, the case was postponed until February 9.
