Renowned Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli, known for his bold python and animal prints, died at age 83.
In a statement, Roberto Cavalli Maison announced the death and expressed deep sadness over Cavalli’s death.
The Italian designer rose from modest beginnings in Florence to global fame. Cavalli’s designs became famous in the 1970s, and icons like Sophia Loren and Brigitte Bardot wear them. They continued to attract celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez.
His extravagant lifestyle included Ferraris, thoroughbred horses, and his appearance, often featuring tailored shirts that showed off his bronzed chest. Cavalli’s life of glamour included a marriage to a Miss Universe runner-up, a purple helicopter, a Tuscan vineyard, and friendships with stars like Sharon Stone and Cindy Crawford.
Despite challenges like the rise of minimalism in the 1980s and legal battles over tax evasion, from which he was acquitted, Cavalli’s influence in fashion remained strong. In 2005, he even redesigned the Playboy Bunnies’ uniforms, introducing a leopard print version.
Born in Florence on November 15, 1940, Cavalli began his career painting on T-shirts. A chance meeting at a party in 1970 launched his fashion career. He soon opened a shop in Saint Tropez and later debuted his collection in Paris and Florence, gaining recognition for his innovative designs.
Cavalli’s love for nature influenced his iconic prints. He often said he drew inspiration from nature’s beauty, aiming to reflect it in his work.
In the later years, despite financial difficulties leading to selling his fashion house to private equity in 2015, Cavalli continued to innovate. He collaborated with H&M and designed tour outfits for Beyonce.
In 2019, Vision Investments from Dubai acquired Cavalli’s fashion group, marking a new phase for the brand.
Cavalli’s death marks the end of an era, leaving a legacy of creativity and luxury that will inspire future generations.
