Automobile giants Hyundai Motor and Kia announced they are recalling more than 91,000 new vehicles in the U.S. The recall is due to fire risks associated with the Idle Stop & Go oil pump assembly’s electronic controllers, which may contain damaged electrical components causing overheating. To mitigate the danger, owners are advised to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until necessary repairs are conducted.
Models Covered and Steps Forward
The recall affects the Hyundai 2023-2024 Palisade, 2023 Tucson, Sonata, Elantra, and Kona vehicles, along with the 2023-2024 Seltos and 2023 Kia Soul Sportage vehicles. Hyundai vehicles number around 52,000, with nearly 40,000 Kia vehicles also recalled. Owners will be notified in late September for inspection and potential replacement of the electric oil pump controller.
Hyundai has already initiated steps to provide rental vehicles to those feeling unsafe until recall fixes are available. Hyundai’s investigation into these issues was prompted by a report in December of heat damage on a 2023 Palisade’s electric oil pump wire harness/connector, while Kia’s investigation followed a similar report for a 2023 Soul in June.
