An Assistant Prof of the Institute of Business Administration (IBA)Sukkur, Dr. Mohammad Ajmal Sawand, was shot dead on Thursday.
According to police, Dr. Mohammad Ajmal Sawand became a victim of the Sundrani clan’s ongoing conflict over “Karo, Kari (honor).”
Dr. Mohammad Ajmal Sawand was driving back to Sukkur from Shawli village when attackers opened fire indiscriminately at his car in Kandhkot’s Shalo area, causing immediate death.
SSP Kandhkot Irfan Ali Samo shared the detail with the media and stated that two factions from the Sundrani and Sawand clans had disagreed since 2022 following a clash related to a matter of “honor.” A woman and four men from the Sundrani clan died in the clash last year.
After the conflict, the group from the Sawand clan left their homes and escaped Shawli village, presumably to evade revenge, the officer mentioned.
SSP Samo said that police had secured the area and searched different sites to capture Dr. Ajmal Sawand’s alleged killers.
Numerous armed individuals from the Sawand community and residents quickly went to the ambush location and moved the professor’s body to the Taluka hospital. Following a post-mortem examination, the body was given back to the family.
The honor dispute involved a girl from the Sundrani clan and a man from the Sawand community. After being declared ‘Karo,’ the man was killed in September, while the situation for the girl, deemed ‘Kari,’ is still unknown.
The funeral prayer took place that evening in Society Area, Sukkur. Prof. Sawand’s final rites were attended by teachers, students, government officials, and individuals from various sectors.
IBA Vice Chancellor Asif Sheikh stated that Dr. Sawand obtained his Ph.D. from Paris Descartes University and had been employed at the institution for the past eight years.
