Hunan University of Medicine (HNUM) in China has honoured Pakistani scientist Professor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary by naming its newly inaugurated research building after him, recognizing his significant contributions to medical sciences.
The state-of-the-art facility, which encompasses 13,000 square feet, will host 17 full-time researchers focused on enhancing scientific collaboration between Pakistan and China.
Founded in 1912 by the esteemed medical educator Mr. Yan Fuqing, HNUM has become China’s leading public medical university. Operating under the Hunan Provincial Department of Education, it spans two campuses, Jinxi and Jinhai, with a combined area of 945,300 square meters.
The university employs a dedicated faculty 4,642 and educates 14,425 full-time students across 20 comprehensive undergraduate and graduate medical programs. The dedication of the new research building to Prof. Choudhary marks a historic first for HNUM, celebrating a Pakistani scientist in such a significant manner.
Professor Choudhary has played a pivotal role in establishing Sino-Pak research centres and enhancing the cooperation of Chinese and Pakistani researchers in scientific ventures. His distinguished career in science has earned him numerous awards, including the Mustafa Prize, several Civil Awards from Pakistan, the Friendship Award from China in 2022, and the Golden Silkball Friendship Award.
Currently serving as the Vice President of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for Central & South Asia, Prof. Choudhary is also a Fellow of multiple prestigious scientific organizations, including TWAS and the Royal Society of Chemistry in London.
The launch of this facility underscores a significant advancement in strengthening China-Pakistan collaboration in scientific research.
