China’s Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak has heightened global health concerns.
India has announced three new cases; the infants and their families have not travelled recently, indicating any direct exposure from China or other countries.
Images and reports from Chinese social media depicting overcrowded hospitals have intensified fears of another major health crisis reminiscent of COVID-19, which initially appeared in China in 2019 with similar flu-like symptoms. Despite these parallels, HMPV and COVID-19 differ significantly.

HMPV and COVID-19 are from distinct viral families. HMPV generally causes mild to moderate symptoms, while some COVID-19 strains can lead to severe complications requiring hospitalization. The incubation period for HMPV is 3 to 6 days, compared to 2 to 14 days for COVID-19, which varies by variant. COVID-19 may also present unique symptoms, such as loss of taste and smell, with diarrhoea reported in some cases.

Though not a new virus, HMPV has recently drawn attention due to the outbreak in China.
Despite their differences, HMPV and COVID-19 share several characteristics:
- Both primarily affect the respiratory system.
- They transmit through infected droplets, direct contact, or contaminated surfaces.
- Overlapping symptoms include cough, sore throat, fever, and shortness of breath.
- Children, the elderly, and individuals with preexisting conditions are especially vulnerable to severe complications from both viruses.
