The prospect of Hassan Khomeini as the potential Supreme Leader has gained attention as Iran’s clerical establishment considers who will succeed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The death of Khamenei has accelerated deliberations within the Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for selecting Iran’s Supreme Leader. Among the names discussed is Hassan Khomeini, grandson of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic.
Hassan Khomeini, 53, is the most visible of his grandfather’s grandchildren. He serves as custodian of Ayatollah Khomeini’s mausoleum in southern Tehran and holds the clerical rank of Hojatoleslam.
Although he has never served in government, he maintains close ties with reformist figures, including former presidents Mohammed Khatami and Hassan Rouhani. His positions on social issues and governance have led some observers to describe him as relatively moderate within Iran’s clerical structure.
Khomeini has occasionally criticised the authorities. In 2021, he criticised the Guardian Council after reformist candidates were barred from presidential elections. He also called for accountability following the death of Mahsa Amini, whose case triggered nationwide protests.
Despite reformist leanings, Khomeini has consistently affirmed loyalty to the Islamic Republic. During periods of unrest, he publicly supported the establishment and condemned violence.
He has also expressed strong positions on regional issues, including opposition to Israel, while praising Iran’s leadership during periods of conflict.

A decade ago, Khomeini sought a seat in the Assembly of Experts but was disqualified by the Guardian Council. Though religious credentials were cited, many saw the decision as politically motivated.
Some Iranian politicians argue that appointing a relatively moderate figure could stabilise the system amid economic hardship and public dissent. Others point to hardline candidates, including figures close to Khamenei’s inner circle.
The selection process now rests with the Assembly of Experts, whose deliberations will shape Iran’s political direction in the coming years.
