Pakistan triumphantly re-entered the global squash scene on Sunday when young sensation, Hamza Khan, outshone Egypt’s Mohamed Zakaria, securing victory in the World Junior Championship in Melbourne.
Hamza triumphed over Zakaria 3-1 in a tightly contested final match, with the game scores reading 10-12, 14-12, 11-3, and 11-6.
This success marked the end of a 37-year hiatus from the World Junior Squash Championship victory podium for Pakistan, a seat last occupied by the legendary Jansher Khan back in 1986.
Hamza’s Defining Performance in the Final
The showdown between Hamza and Zakaria kicked off on an exhilarating note, with the first two games ending in intense tiebreakers. However, Hamza took control in the subsequent games, leading to a convincing 3-1 victory.
In the second game, which was an enduring 26-minute standoff, Zakaria initially gained the upper hand with a score of 12-10. Hamza, trailing 8-10, valiantly denied Zakaria the decisive game point twice, eventually turning the tables to claim a 14-12 tiebreaker win.
The following two games saw a complete turnaround, with Hamza firmly in the driver’s seat. He swiftly won the third game within 6 minutes, scoring 11-3, and clinched the fourth game with a score of 11-6.
Hamza’s road to the final on Saturday was equally thrilling. He faced a challenging opponent in Melvil Scianimanico of France, who battled back from two games and match ball down. Despite this fierce competition, Hamza emerged victorious, paving his way to the grand final.
