Hammad Azhar, a leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), announced on July 25, 2025, that he would surrender to the court regarding cases related to the riots that occurred on May 9, 2023, following the death of his father.
In a post on X, Azhar expressed his gratitude for the condolences he received and reaffirmed his innocence, stating his intention to legally challenge the “fabricated” charges against him.
Azhar shared on X: “I am deeply thankful to all who stood with us in this time of grief.” As the only son and father of two, he emphasised family support: “My mother has endured the brunt of this ordeal over the past two years.” Declaring his innocence, he stated: “I will approach the court to contest these false cases and seek justice.” His surrender follows the passing of his father, senior politician Mian Muhammad Azhar.

The May 9 riots erupted after PTI founder Imran Khan’s arrest, with supporters targeting military and government sites, including Jinnah House and GHQ in Rawalpindi. Azhar faces charges under the Anti-Terrorism Act for alleged involvement in vandalism and unrest. He maintains the cases lack a legal basis, echoing PTI’s claim of political targeting.

Azhar’s decision came after he emerged from hiding to attend his father’s funeral. On X, supporters praised his resolve, with comments like “Stand strong, Hammad!” Others criticised the cases as unjust. The emotional toll on his family, particularly his mother, underscores the personal stakes.
Azhar’s surrender could set a precedent for other PTI leaders facing similar charges, with recent convictions like those of Yasmin Rashid highlighting ongoing legal battles. The outcome may influence PTI’s strategy ahead of future elections.
