On July 4, 2025, Hamas announced a “positive” response to a U.S.-brokered 60-day Gaza ceasefire proposal, signalling readiness for talks to release hostages and end the 21-month conflict, per its official website. With Gaza’s death toll at 57,000, this development is critical.

Hamas, after internal consultations, delivered its response to mediators, expressing willingness to negotiate the ceasefire’s implementation, which includes releasing 10 living hostages and 18 deceased, per a negotiation official. U.S. President Donald Trump, announcing the “final proposal” on July 1, expressed optimism, stating, “There could be a Gaza deal next week,” despite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s silence. Challenges remain, including disputes over Rafah crossing access and Israeli troop withdrawal timelines, per a Palestinian official.

Gaza’s Health Ministry reports 57,000 Palestinian deaths since Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack, which killed 1,200 Israelis and took 251 hostages, per Israeli data. Recent Israeli strikes, including a 2 a.m. airstrike on Khan Younis, killing 15, have displaced 90% of Gaza’s 2.1 million residents, per UNRWA. A 13-year-old, Mayar Al Farr, mourned her brother, killed while seeking aid, highlighting the crisis. Protests in Tel Aviv, with 50 empty chairs symbolizing hostages, demand a deal, per Haaretz.

Trump, meeting Netanyahu on July 7, pressed for a swift ceasefire, claiming Israel agreed to conditions, though Netanyahu insists on disarming Hamas, per The Times of Israel. Families like Ruby Chen, whose son Itay was killed in captivity, urged action. Trump’s broader diplomacy, including tariff threats against 10–12 countries and Abraham Accords expansion talks, shapes the context; however, his claim of a neutralised Iranian nuclear threat lacks IAEA backing, according to Reuters.

Hamas’s positive response to the ceasefire proposal offers hope for ending Gaza’s devastating conflict, impacting millions. With 57,000 deaths and 20 hostages still held, the stakes are high. Trending on X, the situation fuels global debates on peace, humanitarian aid, and U.S. mediation, highlighting the need for diplomatic breakthroughs amidst ongoing violence and regional tensions.
