Hamas’s military faction, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, released a distressing video on Saturday showcasing a hostage situation.
The video, lasting just 11 seconds, displayed Nadav Popplewell, a dual national of Britain and Israel, visibly under duress, delivering a scripted warning with the ominous caption, “Time is running out. Your government is lying.”
Popplewell, identified by the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, appeared with a black eye but no other visible injuries. He introduced himself in the clip, stating he is 51 years old and from Kibbutz Nirim in southern Israel.
This recent footage marks the third instance in less than a month where Hamas has publicized videos of captives, heightening the emotional and political stakes for the Israeli government. The earlier videos featured Keith Siegel, Omri Miran, and Hersh Goldberg-Polin, all shown alive.
The release of these videos coincides with mounting pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to negotiate the hostages’ release. Despite ongoing indirect talks, there has been no breakthrough, and the conflict has seen no cessation of hostilities.
The grim context of this video stretches back to October 7, when Hamas militants abducted approximately 250 people during an attack on southern Israel. Of those initially taken, Israeli officials report that 128 remain in captivity, including 36 who have died.
The October 7 attack, which triggered widespread casualties and a subsequent Israeli military retaliation, has led to significant loss of life on both sides, with Israeli figures documenting over 1,170 mostly civilian deaths and the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza reporting nearly 35,000 fatalities, predominantly women and children.
