On the 25th day of the World Culture Festival, the play ‘Gurrya Ka Ghar’ captivated the audience at Karachi Arts Council of Pakistan. Written and directed by Anwer Jafri, this 90-minute drama featured a skilled ensemble cast, including Naina Black, Sheema Kermani, Paras Masroor, Imran Khan, Tabita Simrin, and Harris Khan. The play’s poignant social theme resonated deeply with those in attendance.
The narrative revolves around Tehmina, a middle-class Pakistani woman portrayed as committed to her husband, Murad, yet yearning for a more impactful existence. Engaged in social welfare at a shelter, Tehmina meets Sakina, a working-class woman whose resilience and spirit of justice inspire Tehmina to challenge the disparities in her marriage.
The play culminates with Tehmina leaving her metaphorical “doll’s house” to pursue a life of freedom, advocating for equality and transparency in relationships. The high-quality, focused storyline, free from superfluous characters, ensured the audience’s engagement throughout the performance.
The festival will run until November 2 at the ACP Karachi. It will feature over 450 artists from 40 countries and exceptional performances and themes.
