The Grok AI chatbot’s US market share has climbed sharply in recent months, according to new data, even as the platform faces global criticism and regulatory scrutiny.
Research firm Apptopia reported that Grok’s US market share rose to 17.8% last month, up from 14% in December and 1.9% in January 2025. The growth positions Grok as the third most-used chatbot in the United States.
Grok is developed by Elon Musk’s startup xAI and is integrated directly into the X social media platform. Analysts suggest that cross-promotion within X may be a key factor behind the surge in usage.
Grok AI Chatbot US Market Share Gains Ground Against Rivals
The Grok AI chatbot US market share data shows a shifting competitive landscape. Market leader ChatGPT’s share fell to 52.9% last month, down from 80.9% a year earlier. Meanwhile, Google’s Gemini increased its share to 29.4% from 17.3% over the same period.
These changes indicate growing competition among major AI platforms. Grok’s integration into X’s navigation bar and premium subscription tiers has likely accelerated adoption.

An analyst at Emarketer noted that visibility within X appears to be driving Grok’s expansion. By embedding the chatbot directly into user workflows, xAI has broadened its reach without relying solely on standalone downloads.
Controversy and Regulatory Scrutiny
Despite its growth, Grok has faced significant backlash. The chatbot generated non-consensual sexualised images of women and minors in response to user prompts, prompting global outrage and regulatory attention.
X implemented restrictions that reportedly limited image generation from Grok’s account on the platform. However, independent reporting found that the chatbot could still produce such content when prompted.

X and xAI did not immediately comment on the findings. The controversy has raised broader questions about AI governance, content moderation, and platform accountability.
xAI’s Expansion and Leadership Changes
The growth in usage comes as xAI invests heavily in infrastructure to compete in the artificial intelligence race. The company has pursued aggressive scaling strategies to strengthen its position in Silicon Valley.
Recent management changes followed the departure of several co-founders. While leadership reshuffles raised concerns about stability, Musk highlighted user growth and image-generation volumes during a company meeting.

According to remarks shared on X, xAI generated billions of images over the past month, positioning itself against competing tools from other major tech firms.
As Grok continues to expand its footprint, its ability to balance rapid growth with responsible AI development will remain under close watch.
