The Greek parliament has enacted transformative legislation by legalizing same-sex marriage and adoption, positioning Greece as a leader among Orthodox Christian nations in terms of LGBTQ rights.
The pivotal legislation, spearheaded by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the New Democracy party, was successfully passed despite considerable opposition from the influential Orthodox Church. This legal change allows for both same-sex marriage and adoption by same-sex couples, signifying a major advance in the country’s commitment to civil rights.
The bill received substantial support, with 176 of the 245 present Members of Parliament voting in its favour after two days of intense debate. Prime Minister Mitsotakis hailed the passage of this bill as a “milestone for human rights,” affirming Greece’s status as a “progressive and democratic country, deeply committed to European values.”
Despite the significant pushback from the Orthodox Church, the reform was backed by a broad spectrum of political parties, including the leftist Syriza party, led by Stefanos Kasselakis, who is openly gay. This legislative success underscores a significant shift in societal attitudes, moving towards greater acceptance and protection of LGBTQ rights.
The personal testimony of Stefanos Kasselakis during the debates brought attention to the tangible effects of legal disparities on same-sex couples and their children. The overwhelming approval of this bill marks a significant departure from the Orthodox community’s traditionalist views.
As celebrations unfolded outside the parliament in Athens, with rainbow flags emblematic of LGBTQ pride, families affected by this change rejoiced in a historic victory. This reform grants legal status and rights to LGBTQ families, addressing longstanding disparities.
Beginning its path towards inclusivity in 2015 with the legalization of civil unions for same-sex couples, Greece has now taken a monumental step by becoming the first Orthodox nation to endorse same-sex marriages.
Prime Minister Mitsotakis, in praising this significant progress, remarked, “This achievement stands as a milestone for human rights, reflecting the modern ethos of Greece as an advanced, democratic nation deeply committed to European principles,” thus underscoring the importance of this step towards equality within the Orthodox domain.
