The federal government has officially launched the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), as detailed in a newly issued ordinance.
The NCCIA is specifically designed to address crimes committed via the Internet and social media platforms.
Following the ordinance, all cyber crime cases and inquiries will transition from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to this newly established agency. The agency will be entrusted to a senior officer, ranking either grade 21 or 22, appointed as the Director-General (DG) for two years. The DG will wield authority comparable to that of an Inspector General of Police.
In its initial phase, personnel from the FIA’s Cyber Wing will be reassigned to the new agency, where they will serve for one year. The agency will operate under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) provisions.
Similar entities inspire the National Cyber Crime Investigation structure and operational framework in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Plans to further institutionalize the agency include the presentation of the National Cybercrime Investigation Agency bill in parliament, as confirmed by official sources.
