The Gwadar Port Authority (GPA) has approved a grant of Rs823 million to buy boat engines for Gawadar’s 3,291 underprivileged fishermen.

The finance government will provide a GPA of Rs250,000 for each fisherman to buy a boat engine.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on June 3 that 2,000 engines would be given to underprivileged fishermen within three months.

The Prime Minister’s Office then requested the Ministry of Maritime Affairs to complete protocols to deliver free engines for fishing boats to worthy fishermen based on well-defined criteria.

The maritime ministry submitted a project to the Planning Commission to give fishermen 2,000 engines for Rs500m over a year.

At a steering committee meeting on Gwadar initiatives on July 6, a team was constituted to finalize the boat engine distribution criteria.

The Gwadar Port Authority advertised three tenders in national media on July 6, August 17, and October 13, but none received a response meeting the required criteria.
