At the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, 17-year-old Australian sprinter Gout Gout is turning heads. The teenage phenom, born to South Sudanese refugees, debuts in the 200m heats on Wednesday. With times faster than Usain Bolt’s junior bests, Gout Gout is seen as the heir to the sprint king’s throne.
Gout Gout ran 20.04 seconds at the 2024 Australian All Schools Championships, beating Bolt’s under-18 record of 20.13. In June 2025, he clocked 20.02 at the Ostrava Golden Spike, shattering Australia’s 56-year senior record set by Peter Norman in 1968. Bolt himself posted a photo with Gout Gout, captioning it, “He looks like young me.” Yet, Bolt warned the transition to senior level is tough, stressing the need for focus and the right team.

Gout Gout’s family fled South Sudan in 2006 via Egypt, settling in Australia. He shares a room with his brother Mawjen and plans to study psychology after school. His name, pronounced “Gout Gout,” sparks confusion with the arthritis condition. His father, Bona, insists it’s a Sudanese name misspelled as “Guot Guot.” Manager James Templeton says it’s “Gout Gout,” but the family calls him Guot. Fans joke he’s “Gout of this world.”

Gout Gout’s parents, Bona (a food technician and Uber driver) and Monica (a cleaner), keep him grounded. With six siblings, they provide unwavering support. Gout Gout admits Bolt comparisons feel overwhelming but says, “I’m just trying to be myself.” His Tokyo debut could pave the way for gold at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
“I really liked what him and his team did this year where they just got wins underneath their belt.”
