Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has announced a substantial $40 billion investment in Texas, representing the company’s largest financial commitment to any single U.S. state. Governor Greg Abbott participated in the Thursday announcement in Midlothian, emphasising the project’s significant economic and technological implications.
The expansion plan includes establishing three new data centre campuses specifically designed to support Google’s expanding cloud computing and artificial intelligence operations. These energy-intensive facilities will incorporate complementary programs focused on strengthening Texas’s electrical grid and enhancing workforce development.
Governor Abbott characterised the initiative as “a Texas-sized investment in the future of our great state.” He positioned Texas as the central location for artificial intelligence development, where technological innovation can integrate with expanding energy resources.
The governor emphasised the national importance of maintaining American leadership in artificial intelligence. He stated that Texas provides the ideal environment for this technological advancement, combining business-friendly policies with robust energy infrastructure.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai connected the investment to Texas’s cultural identity, noting that “everything is bigger in Texas – and that certainly applies to the golden opportunity with AI.” The project will generate thousands of employment positions while providing specialised skills training.
The initiative includes substantial workforce development components, targeting more than 1,700 electrical apprentices for specialised training programs. These efforts will strengthen Texas’s talent pipeline for artificial intelligence and data-intensive industries requiring technical expertise.
Texas as an Emerging Technology Hub
Texas has become an increasingly preferred destination for major technology and energy corporations. Tesla’s Gigafactory in Austin, combined with substantial data centre investments from Amazon and Meta, has established the state as a centre for advanced manufacturing and cloud infrastructure.
