Google has confirmed an update for Pixel 4a units this week to enhance battery performance stability, marking the end of its software cycle with the Android 13 update, which may decrease available battery capacity and charging efficiency in certain Pixel 4a phones.
According to Google’s support page for the Pixel 4a Battery Performance Program, an automatic update for Android 13 will roll out to all Pixel 4a devices from January 8 to bolster battery performance stability. Google notes that this update could reduce battery capacity and alter charging performance for some models.
“After your device downloads the software update, it will automatically restart to implement the changes. For some devices, this update includes new battery management features to enhance stability, potentially shortening the duration between charges,” Google explained. Affected users might also observe slower charging speeds and alterations to the battery-level indicator.

While all Pixel 4a units will receive the update, only a few might see a decline in battery performance. Google is offering affected users a free battery replacement. Alternatively, users can opt for a one-time payment of $50 (approximately Rs. 4,000) or a $100 (approximately Rs. 8,000) credit towards a new Pixel phone on Google’s online store.
Owners of impacted Pixel 4a devices have until January 8 to choose one of these appeasement options. Battery replacement services are available at walk-in repair centres in India, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Singapore, with mail-in options in the United States. Availability of battery replacements is contingent upon location eligibility and supply constraints.
