The Google Home Gemini extension is being launched worldwide, allowing users to control smart home devices through both Android and iOS.
According to a report, this new feature will be available globally in the coming weeks. The extension enables the Gemini app on Android and iOS to manage and control smart home devices connected to Google Home.
With the extension, users can type or speak natural language commands, allowing the AI-powered chatbot to understand the context and execute tasks seamlessly. Currently, Gemini supports various Google services, including Google Workspace apps, Google Maps, YouTube, and YouTube Music.
Google Home Gemini Extension Details
A 9to5Google report confirms that the Google Home Gemini extension is being made available to all Gemini users. Initially released as a public preview in November 2024, the feature is now being rolled out globally. Although some users have mentioned noticing the update, they have not confirmed its availability yet.
Once live, users can activate the extension through the Gemini app or web client. To enable it:
- On the Web Client: Go to Settings > Extensions > Google Home, then toggle the button.
- On the App: Tap your profile picture, navigate to the Extensions menu, find @Google Home, and toggle the button to activate.
Smart Home Device Compatibility
According to Google’s support page, the Gemini extension can control various smart home appliances connected to Google Home, including:
- Lights, sockets, and switches
- Air conditioners, thermostats, and fans
- Curtains, smart TVs, speakers, and washing machines
For example, users can command the app to “Set the hall for a gaming session,” which will adjust the lights, air conditioning, and a smart Google TV. The app can handle more abstract commands, like “Set the AC to a temperature comfortable for sleeping.”
Limitations and Language Support
The extension supports only English language inputs and works with text and audio commands. However, there are a few limitations:
- It does not support commands for security devices requiring a PIN.
- It cannot stream video feeds from smart cameras.
- It does not yet support executing routines.
Despite these limitations, the extension’s ability to handle complex, multi-step commands in natural language represents a significant leap in smart home integration.
