Google has begun rolling out new Gemini-powered features in Gmail. These aim to turn the inbox into a more proactive and intelligent assistant.
In a blog post, Google said the updates will roll out in phases, with some tools enabled by default. One of the most notable additions is AI-generated summaries of long email threads. When users open conversations with many replies, Gmail now condenses the discussion into a short overview highlighting the key points.
“We’re bringing Gmail into the Gemini era and making it your personal, proactive inbox assistant,” the company said.
Google explained that inboxes often contain valuable information, but finding it has traditionally required advanced search and manual review. Even after locating the right emails, users often need to sift through lengthy threads to extract answers.
We’re bringing @gmail into the Gemini era by making it a personal, proactive inbox assistant that accelerates your day.
Here’s how it gets more done:

To address this, Google has introduced AI Overviews. These summaries turn information into direct answers, removing the need to dig through emails. Users can ask questions in natural language, such as requesting a service provider’s name or recalling details from past conversations. Gemini will surface the relevant information instantly.

AI Overview conversation summaries are rolling out to all users at no cost. However, the ability to ask questions directly within the inbox using AI Overviews is limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

Google has also expanded its writing tools. The Help Me Write feature is now available to everyone. It allows users to polish existing emails or draft new messages from scratch. Gmail is also introducing smarter Suggested Replies that adapt to the tone and context of conversations. It offers one-click responses that match a user’s writing style.
In addition, a new Proofread feature provides advanced checks for grammar, tone, and style. It helps users refine messages before sending them.
These Gemini-powered features are rolling out today in the United States for Gmail users, as well as for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. The initial release supports English, with more languages and regions planned in the coming months.
