Users of the popular social media platform Twitter are expressing their emotional goodbyes to their legacy verified badges as the company plans to remove them starting April 1st.
This decision was made after Elon Musk announced that the platform would begin charging a monthly fee for the blue checkmark, with $8 per month for general users and $11 per month for iOS and Android signups due to additional app store costs. This announcement has drawn a significant amount of criticism from Twitter users.
Previously, before Musk’s involvement with Twitter, verified checkmarks were employed to authenticate and identify “notable” and active accounts of public interest. Now, as the platform is set to undergo this change, social media users lament the loss of their verified accounts by sharing heartfelt memes and messages on the platform.
In response to the backlash, Elon Musk has defended the controversial payment model, asserting that social media platforms that fail to implement similar measures would be vulnerable to bots and fake accounts. He emphasized that creating thousands of fake Twitter accounts with just one computer is easy, and modern artificial intelligence further exacerbates this issue. To combat this problem, Musk suggests that verified accounts should require a phone number from a reputable carrier and a credit card.
Musk has predicted that any social media network that does not adopt this approach will fail. This change in Twitter’s system places significant pressure on companies, journalists, and celebrities who have relied on the platform as their primary communication channel and used the blue checkmark as a symbol of credibility.
Additionally, this change raises concerns about the possibility of imposters and pranksters paying for an officially verified status for completely fake accounts, further muddling the authenticity of verified accounts on the platform.
