On August 10, 2025, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved a solar photovoltaic power project worth Rs24.957 billion, which will have a capacity of 100 megawatts and will serve multiple districts in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif announced just two days earlier during his visit to G&B. The project has already received clearance from the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) and will commence immediately, with an expected completion date within three years.
The initiative will deliver clean energy across districts, including Astore, Daryal, Tangir Diamer, Ghanche, Ghizer, Gilgit, Hunza, Ishkoman, Nagar, Rondu, Skardu, and Shigar. The phased rollout includes:
- Phase 1: Skardu receives 18.958 MW.
- Phase 2: Hunza gets 6.005 MW, Gilgit 28.013 MW, and Diamer 13.126 MW.
- Phase 3: Remaining districts share 16.096 MW.
Additionally, 18.162 MW of off-grid electricity will power hospitals and government offices, enhancing regional infrastructure.
The project aligns with Pakistan’s push for sustainable energy, addressing Gilgit-Baltistan’s power needs and supporting economic growth. It strengthens the region’s infrastructure, vital for remote areas, and reflects the government’s commitment to renewable energy development, as noted by the Prime Minister’s Office Media Wing.
