An Australian family in Queensland was surprised when they discovered a massive 16-foot carpet python slithering on their roof during lunchtime. The incident, captured in a video that rapidly went viral on TikTok, accumulated over 10 million views. The clip displayed the sizable reptile transitioning from the roof to an adjacent tree.
While recording the video, family members expressed their astonishment. One child questioned how to remove the snake, with an adult responding that they couldn’t. Another child, curious about the type of snake, was informed it was a carpet snake. Viewers took to the comments section, with one humorously lamenting their newfound knowledge of such massive pythons and another mistaking it for an anaconda.
Snake Catcher Dan from the Sunshine Coast explained that carpet pythons, which can grow between four to five meters and weigh up to 15 kilograms, are commonly found in trees. They might be basking in the sun, avoiding threats, or hunting prey like birds and possums. He detailed how their muscle distribution enables them to move and support their weight while navigating trees.
