In November 2024, household budgets hit as cooking oil and ghee prices soared, increasing by up to Rs60 per kilogram in the open market. This sharp price rise occurred despite a recent slight decline in the country’s inflation rate.
Market reports indicate a significant increase of Rs54 per kg for first-grade ghee and cooking oil, while second and third-grade varieties have hiked up to Rs60 per kg. Consequently, the retail price for first-grade ghee and oil has escalated from Rs505 to Rs559 per kg, posing challenges for consumers facing increasing expenses.
The price for second-grade ghee has risen from Rs440 to Rs500 per kg. General retail prices for ghee now range between Rs525 and Rs530 per kg, varying by location. Furthermore, the cost of second-grade oil has jumped from Rs452 to Rs512 per litre, with some vendors charging between Rs530 and Rs540.
In contrast, the Utility Stores Corporation (USC) recently reduced the price of sugar by Rs13 per kg at utility stores nationwide, bringing it down from Rs153 to Rs140 per kg.
