Researchers evaluated a German man who claimed to have received 217 COVID-19 vaccinations, finding his immune system fully functional. The impact of such excessive vaccination on the immune system remains unclear. Experts previously speculated that continuous exposure to antigens might diminish immune cell efficacy. This case, detailed in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, contradicts those concerns. In Germany, over 60 million have been vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2, often multiple times.
Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nurnberg (FAU) researchers investigated the man whose case emerged through news articles. After contacting him, they conducted tests in Erlangen, revealing he genuinely received 217 shots, with 134 confirmed. Vaccines, by introducing pathogen components, train the immune system to recognize and combat the actual virus more effectively.
The study aimed to explore repeated antigen exposure effects akin to chronic infections like HIV. Although some theories suggest repeated exposure could exhaust T-cells, making them less effective, this study found no evidence of such an effect. Even after numerous vaccinations, the participant showed robust T-effector cell activity against SARS-CoV-2, comparable to those with standard vaccination doses. As confirmed by Katharina Kocher, one of the study’s lead authors, memory cell counts were also similar, indicating no compromised immune response.
