Actor George Clooney, a prominent fundraiser for the Democratic Party, has publicly urged President Joe Biden to withdraw from his reelection campaign. This plea follows Biden’s challenging debate performance against Donald Trump last month.
Clooney, a stalwart supporter within the Hollywood elite crucial to the Democrats, has aligned with other public figures requesting that 81-year-old Biden step aside.
In a New York Times article, Clooney expressed his admiration for Biden, calling him a friend and a leader he believes in. However, he highlighted the inevitable challenges of age. “The one battle he cannot win is the fight against time,” Clooney stated.
Recently, Clooney hosted a highly successful fundraiser in Los Angeles with former President Barack Obama, raising a record $28 million for the campaign. However, he observed a noticeable decline in Biden’s vigour compared to past years. Clooney referenced Biden’s earlier days, noting a stark contrast in his current capacity, evident during the debate.
Clooney’s call for Biden to step down is part of a broader appeal to senior Democratic figures like Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries, and Nancy Pelosi, encouraging them to support a leadership transition. He emphasized the need for the party to consider other potential candidates like Vice President Kamala Harris and Maryland Governor Wes Moore at the upcoming Democratic convention.
Despite concerns about potential upheaval four months before the election, Clooney dismissed the idea that Biden’s withdrawal would lead to chaos. Instead, he sees it as an opportunity for the Democratic Party to regroup and present a strong candidate to maintain leadership and prevent a Trump administration return.
