Gilgit Baltistan (GB) Chief Minister (CM) Gulbar Khan has urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to station motorway police along the Karakoram Highway (KKH) due to safety concerns.
CM Gulbar Khan emphasized the urgent need for enhanced security and traffic management on the KKH, highlighting the road’s recent spike in deadly accidents. He expressed that motorway police presence is crucial for ensuring the safety of travellers.
In response to a recent tragic incident near Chilas, Gulbar Khan ordered a thorough investigation and called for immediate safety improvements to prevent future accidents.
The Karakoram Highway, a vital route, has experienced increased traffic accidents, which have impacted human lives and the tourism sector in Gilgit Baltistan.
The importance of this issue was underlined by a severe accident last December when unknown attackers targeted a Rawalpindi-bound bus near Chilas. The attack resulted in the bus losing control and colliding with a truck, killing at least 10 people, including two soldiers, and injuring 21 others.
Deputy Commissioner of Diamer, Captain (Rtd) Arif Ahmad, confirmed that the assault led to the bus colliding with a truck, causing significant casualties and drawing attention to the security challenges in the area.
