To celebrate Ramadan for the first time, the Frankfurt Municipality installed illuminated “Happy Ramadan” signs at two entrances of Fressgass, one of the city’s most bustling streets.
Frankfurt’s central streets now feature “Happy Ramadan” messages, accompanied by stars and crescents, welcoming the arrival of Ramadan marks a significant change for Grosse Bockenheimer Strasse, a location traditionally decorated for Christmas, reflecting the spirit of the Islamic holy month for the first time.
“Ramadan is a period of introspection on life’s essentials: sustenance, shelter, and harmony among loved ones,” remarked Frankfurt city council chairperson Hilime Arslaner, highlighting the gesture’s inclusivity.
With Muslims constituting 15% of Frankfurt’s population, this initiative has been warmly received, symbolizing a notable acknowledgement within the community. Germany, home to over five million Muslims, or 6.6% of its populace, gears up for Ramadan, which commences on the evening of March 10 and culminates on April 9 with Eid al-Fitr festivities.
