In a major development, Nicola Sturgeon, the former First Minister of Scotland, was arrested by Scotland Police on Sunday. She is currently being interrogated as part of an ongoing investigation into the financing and funding of the Scottish National Party (SNP).
The focal point of the police inquiry is over 600,000 pounds (approximately $750,000) raised by the campaigners advocating Scottish independence in 2017. The money was reportedly earmarked for a specific purpose, but there are suspicions that it may have been utilized for other activities.
Earlier in April, as part of the same investigation, Peter Murrell, the husband of Sturgeon, and the then-treasurer of the party were also taken into custody. They were later released without any charges pending further investigations.
Police Scotland officially confirmed the arrest via a Twitter statement, “A 52-year-old woman has today, Sunday 11 June 2023, been arrested as a suspect in connection with the ongoing investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party.” The statement added, “The woman is in custody and is being questioned by Police Scotland detectives.”
Nicola Sturgeon has had a significant political career in Scotland, holding the position of First Minister for the longest tenure in the semi-autonomous government. However, she took the political fraternity by surprise when she decided to step down from her role in February. She justified her decision by stating that she had become a divisive figure and that it was inhibiting her ability to lead Scotland towards independence.
