FIFA Ethics Complaint Filed Over Infantino’s Peace Prize to Trump

FIFA President Gianni Infantino faces a formal ethics complaint following a controversial award presentation. The London-based human rights advocacy group FairSquare filed the complaint with FIFA’s ethics committee on Monday. This action stems from Infantino’s decision to award the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize to United States President Donald Trump during the World Cup draw on December 6, 2025.

Nicholas McGeehan, head of FairSquare, stated the group believes Infantino’s actions harmed global football. “The FIFA head acted in ways that are both dangerous and contrary to the interests of the world’s most popular sport,” McGeehan explained. He clarified that their complaint extends beyond mere political support. It addresses fundamental breaches of FIFA’s governance principles.

The eight-page complaint document argues that awarding a major peace prize to a sitting political leader violates FIFA’s statutory duty of neutrality. The filing asserts, “If the FIFA head acted alone, this should be considered abuse of power.” This language indicates the complaint frames the award as a potential misuse of presidential authority rather than an organisational decision.

This ethics challenge follows earlier criticism from Human Rights Watch. The prominent international NGO also condemned FIFA’s decision to honour President Trump with the Peace Prize. The converging criticism from multiple human rights organisations adds significant weight to the complaint. It creates a coordinated challenge to FIFA’s leadership judgment.

Observers note concerns about the ethics committee’s current effectiveness. Many experts believe the committee lacks the independence and authority it demonstrated in previous decades. This perceived weakness raises questions about whether the body will fully investigate the complaint against its own president.

The committee’s possible responses remain uncertain. If members decide to pursue the complaint, potential outcomes include a formal reprimand or a financial fine against President Infantino. However, the committee might also dismiss the complaint entirely. This decision will test FIFA’s commitment to its own ethical standards and neutrality policy.

The controversy highlights ongoing tensions within global sports governance. It underscores the challenge of maintaining political neutrality while operating in an increasingly polarized world. The outcome will likely influence FIFA’s credibility and its ability to position football as a unifying force above political divisions
