Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has revised the authority structure regarding appointments within various federal ministries and divisions.
The appointment powers, previously concentrated with the Prime Minister, are transferred to individual ministers, advisors, ministers of state, and secretaries. The change starkly contrasts with the approach of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who maintained direct control over these powers.
With Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s endorsement, the federal cabinet ratified this decision through a circulation summary. The new policy fosters a specialized governance framework by integrating experts and professionals across different federal domains.
Under the new system, the creation of positions and direct appointments will proceed following consultations with the Ministry of Finance and the Establishment Division, minimizing the Prime Minister’s direct involvement.
Specific appointment powers are distributed as follows: federal ministers, ministers of state, or advisors will approve the hiring of consultants; secretaries will handle appointments of research associates and young professionals. However, the appointment of technical advisors remains under the purview of the Prime Minister.
A special board will fill these roles through a competitive selection process, ensuring that appointments are merit-based and transparent. This restructuring aims to enhance professionalism and reduce political influence in key governmental appointments, reflecting a significant administrative evolution under Shahbaz Sharif’s leadership.
