The federal government has approved plans to restructure the Frontier Constabulary (FC) into a nationwide security force to be renamed the Federal Constabulary, according to official sources. This transformation will significantly expand the force’s operational mandate across Pakistan.
Under the new framework, the Federal Constabulary will operate in all four provinces, including:
- Islamabad Capital Territory
- Azad Jammu and Kashmir
- Gilgit-Baltistan
The reorganised force will be commanded by officers from the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP), marking a shift in its leadership structure. Government sources indicate this change aims to enhance internal security coordination and improve public order maintenance nationwide.
The transformation requires amendments to the Frontier Constabulary Act of 1915. An ordinance will be issued following federal cabinet approval to establish the force’s expanded legal jurisdiction. This legislative change will formally authorise the constabulary’s operations across all Pakistani territories.
This national security development follows Punjab’s recent establishment of Pakistan’s first dedicated Riot Management Police Force. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif launched the specialised unit to enhance crowd control capabilities and protect both citizens and government infrastructure.
The Federal Constabulary restructuring represents part of broader efforts to modernise Pakistan’s security architecture, ensuring coordinated responses to evolving law enforcement challenges across all regions.
