The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has dismissed additional agents and supervisors connected to the probe into former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election. This continues a pattern of significant personnel changes within the bureau.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the terminations proceeded despite efforts by Washington’s top federal prosecutor, Jeanine Pirro, to pause them. The agents were initially fired, then temporarily reinstated, before being dismissed again on Tuesday.
The exact number of agents fired is unclear. Spokespeople for FBI Director Kash Patel and U.S. Attorney Pirro did not immediately respond to requests for comment. These firings are part of a larger personnel shift under the leadership of Director Patel. Multiple senior officials involved in investigations that drew criticism from the Trump administration have been pushed out.

In September, three ousted high-ranking FBI officials sued Director Patel. They accused him of yielding to political pressure to carry out a “campaign of retribution.” The FBI Agents Association condemned the recent actions. In a statement, the group said the director has “disregarded the law and launched a campaign of erratic and arbitrary retribution.”
They highlighted the confusion of the agents being fired, reinstated, and fired again. The association argued that an agent’s appropriate work on a lawful investigation should never be grounds for termination. The 2020 election investigation has been intensely scrutinised by Republican lawmakers. They have accused the Justice Department of being weaponised against political opponents.
This personnel change adds to a sense of upheaval within the bureau. Recent months have also seen the dismissal of the head of the FBI’s Washington field office and agents involved in other controversial incidents
