Sunny Deol, famed for patriotic hits like Border and Gadar, told HT City on April 9, 2025, that he’s fine with Pakistani actor Fawad Khan returning to Bollywood with Abir Gulaal, set for release on May 9. “I don’t like getting political; it messes things up. We’re actors; we work for everyone globally,” Deol said, advocating for a borderless industry.
Khan’s comeback, opposite Vaani Kapoor in Aarti S Bagdi’s romantic drama, has stirred buzz and backlash. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) vowed on April 2 to block the film, reigniting tensions over Pakistani artists in India. A 2016 unofficial ban followed political spats, though the Bombay High Court rejected a formal ban in 2023.
Fawad Khan’s Acting Journey
Khan made his Bollywood debut with Khoobsurat in 2014 and gained recognition for his performance in Kapoor & Sons in 2016. He also had a cameo role in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. He is returning with Abir Gulaal, a film produced by Indian Stories, A Richer Lens, and Aarjay Pictures. Deol, whose film Jaat hits theatres today, emphasizes that art should transcend politics, stating, “The world is global; let’s keep it that way.”

Deol’s support contrasts with the MNS’s stance, highlighting the ongoing divide in Bollywood concerning Pakistani actors. As Abir Gulaal approaches, the clash of opinions keeps the focus intense.
