The business community in Faisalabad has declared a suspension of operations in response to escalating electricity prices, stating that current conditions render continued business activities untenable.
At a press conference at the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce, leaders from various industrial associations articulated their concerns regarding the incremental electricity costs and ongoing disputes with Independent Power Producers (IPPs). They noted that the community has already disbursed 830 billion rupees in capacity charges and characterized the situation with IPPs as a fiscal snare that jeopardizes economic stability.
The officials emphasized the international precedent of severing contracts with IPPs, criticizing the government’s inertia in addressing these contractual dilemmas, which threatens to impose a lasting financial burden on future generations.
Moreover, they reported a 7.4 per cent reduction in electricity usage this year compared to the previous, attributing the decline to the increased costs. The community urged the government to undertake decisive actions to alleviate the industrial sector’s crisis, emphasizing the urgent need to avert potential mass unemployment and the closure of industries, which would have dire repercussions for numerous families connected to these sectors.”
