Rawalpindi police discovered a suspicious bag containing an explosive device near Adiala Road in Gorakhpur, merely one kilometre from the Adiala jail. This location is significant as it’s close to where Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan is imprisoned for the cipher case.
The bomb disposal squad confirmed the presence of 1,500 grams of high-grade explosives in the bag. They successfully defused the device, ensuring safety in the area. This development occurred on the day of the cipher trial’s hearing at the Adiala jail.
Security Measures and Legal Proceedings
Judge Abual Hsanat Zulqarnain, overseeing the cipher case under the Official Secrets Act, used an alternate route to reach the jail due to this security situation. Meanwhile, eight lawyers, including Suleman Safdar and Umair Khan Niazi, represent Imran Khan in today’s hearing.
This incident underscores the growing terror threats in Pakistan, with groups like the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) posing significant risks.
The Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) reported an alarming rise in security personnel fatalities and terror attacks in 2023. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan are particularly affected, with these regions accounting for the majority of the violence and attacks.
