Former US Marine Trevor Reed, once imprisoned in Russia for nearly three years and later released in a prisoner exchange in April 2022, has sustained injuries while partaking in the ongoing Ukrainian conflict, the US State Department confirmed.
Reed is currently receiving treatment at the US military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, following his injuries which reportedly occurred several weeks prior.
Vedant Patel, the State Department’s spokesperson, stressed that the US government did not sanction Reed’s participation. The US has warned its citizens against travelling to Ukraine to participate in the conflict.
Patel said, “We have issued incredibly clear warnings to American citizens and nationals not to travel to Ukraine, let alone participate in fighting.” As reported by The Messenger, Reed stepped on a landmine resulting in shrapnel injuries.
Reed’s case gains attention due to his past encounter with the Russian justice system. In 2019, while visiting his Russian fiancée, Reed was convicted of fighting with police while intoxicated. Labelling his detention as unjust and his trial as a “theatre of the absurd,” the US government eventually managed to have him exchanged for a Russian pilot held in the US for drug trafficking charges.
Repercussions and Further Implications
Reed’s case underlines the potential risks facing foreign volunteers in the Ukrainian conflict. It further raises questions regarding citizens’ safety and the potential consequences of independent warfare.
While Reed’s parents, Joey and Paula Reed, opted not to comment on the incident, Reed had previously sought accountability for his Russian detention. He filed a plea with the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention last summer, claiming he was subjected to inhumane treatment and abuse during confinement.
Simultaneously, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, expressed the government’s commitment to securing the release of other Americans held in Russia, like Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and businessman Paul Whelan.
As this situation unfolds, official statements from Russian or Ukrainian authorities regarding Trevor Reed’s involvement or injuries have yet to be released.
