Erdogan’s Diplomatic Plan for Putin’s Visit: Towards Resolving the Ukraine Conflict

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has outlined a diplomatic roadmap for the anticipated visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Turkey in August.

In the potentially groundbreaking meeting, Erdogan aims to discuss pivotal issues concerning the ongoing Ukraine conflict and facilitate diplomatic breakthroughs.

Two primary issues are central to Erdogan’s agenda: extending the Black Sea grain deal and encouraging prisoner exchanges between Russia and Ukraine. Erdogan sees the potential to utilize this meeting as a platform to achieve significant progress towards peace and underline Turkey’s commitment to acting as a crucial arbitrator in these negotiations.

Discussion Points and Hopes for Resolution

The Black Sea grain deal represents a key aspect of the negotiations. This deal allows for the safe exportation of grain from Ukrainian ports via the Black Sea, even amidst conflict. Erdogan is advocating for extensions to the agreement to achieve two years to ensure stability and continuity for the involved nations and to combat food shortages in poorer countries.

Meanwhile, the issue of prisoner exchanges is also under the spotlight. Erdogan and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy acknowledge the importance of securing the release and repatriation of individuals detained during the conflict. A key objective is to attain agreements for the return of all captives and political prisoners.

Erdogan’s approach to Putin’s visit signifies a significant diplomatic manoeuvre in Turkey’s efforts to broker peace in Ukraine. As a NATO member, Turkey is uniquely positioned to maintain diplomatic relations with Russia and Ukraine, despite the conflict.

Erdogan’s strategy of denouncing Russia’s invasion while preserving economic ties has allowed Turkey to balance its relations within the complex regional dynamics delicately.

As the international community keenly watches the unfolding discussions, the Erdogan-Putin talks are expected to shape the trajectory of the Ukraine conflict and the prospects for renewed negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. This visit might mark a significant milestone in the journey towards a peaceful resolution.
